REUMATOID FOOT
Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic autoimmune disease, that often affects the foot and the ankle causing pain and difficulty walking.
Rheumatoid foot is characterized by a degenerative process that, at the begging, arises in the cartilage and then affects the bones, producing structure modifications. As the pathology progresses the sole adipose tissue (fat pad) becomes thin and therefore unable to absorb the shocks while walking, running or jumping nor to distribute correctly the weight.
Practice has shown that cutaneous alterations, like hyperkeratosis (callosity) due to improper gait have negative consequences on patient’s life quality. Even if it is still considered only an annoying and common skin problem, the podiatric treatment may bring a significant improvement of the patient well-being.
Symptomatology is generally unanticipated and progresses gradually, so that symptoms can arise and worsen during weeks or months therefore it is absolutely necessary to promptly intervene.
